In the ManagEnergy Financial Corner you will find information on different kinds of financing for sustainable energy projects. This is presented in feature articles and case studies about local and regional sustainable energy projects that have succeeded in securing finance for their projects.

Sustainable energy covers a wide range of sectors and technologies. Project sizes vary from hundreds to thousands of euros, and on up to tens of millions of euros+. There is no one-size-fits all solution. But there are a number of strategies and approaches which have proved to be viable.

Many sustainable energy technologies are proven and economical. The investment costs are paid back over short periods from energy cost savings. Yet, projects with compelling business cases and strong economic returns remain unimplemented.

Through project development assistance [funding for technical assessments, feasibility studies, preparation required in order to get a project investment-ready], public funding (via Intelligent Energy Europe and Horizon 2020) is leveraging over EUR 4 billion investment - and building a vital body of evidence and experience of developing investment-ready large scale projects.

ELENA programmes are administered by the European Investment Bank, KfW, EBRD and CEB.  ‘Mobilising Local Energy Investments’ (MLEI – now project development assistance under Horizon 2020) is administered by European Commission agency EASME.

Between 2014 and 2020, upwards of EUR 27 billion from the European Structural and Investment Funds will leverage further investment. Read more about ESI funds here.
