Background

Background

The objectives of the FP6 were defined in the Council Decision (2002/834/EC) of the 30 September 2002 adopting a specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration integrating and strengthening the European Research Area (2002 - 2006).

This Decision makes the Commission responsible for drawing up and updating the Work Programme which is to be used for implementing the specific programme, setting out in greater details the objectives and scientific and technological priorities, and the timetable for implementation.

The Commission published its Work Programme on 17 December 2002, together with the first Call for Proposals in the field of Sustainable Energy Systems, and subsequently published a second Call for proposals in June 2003.

The main objectives of this FP6 Activity are:

Strengthening the S&T capacities needed for Europe to be able to implement a sustainable development model in the short and in the long term, integrating its social, economic and environmental dimensions; contributing to international efforts mitigating adverse trends in global change.

It is split into three main Thematic Areas:

The Cordis home page for the Sustainable Development activity includes information on:

Consultation for revision of the FP6 Energy Work Programme (mid-term review)

For further information see: ec.europa.eu/dgs/energy_transport/rtd/wp_revision/index_en.htm

Around the mid-term of the programme, the Commission works together with the Programme Committee and with the Energy and Transport Forum to review the Work programme including the Timetable for the implementation of Calls for Proposals (roadmap) addressing the remaining programme period until the end of 2006.
