The Central Europe programme, a European Union funding programme that makes €231 million of financing available to cooperation projects involving partners across Central Europe, has opened its first call for proposals. Programme partnerships are invited to submit their project proposals for the first call until 14 April 2008 to the Joint Technical Secretariat in Vienna.

Central Europe encourages transnational cooperation by providing funding to projects carried out in partnership between public and private organizations from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia. Project proposals should aim at improving regional competitiveness and quality of life by focusing on one or several of four programme priorities: innovation, accessibility, environment and competitiveness and attractiveness of cities and regions. The programme is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and runs from 2007 to 2013.

The priority includes four areas of intervention:

• Developing a high quality environment by managing and protecting natural resources and heritage
• Reducing risks and impacts of natural and man-made hazards
• Supporting the use of renewable energy sources and increasing energy efficiency
• Supporting environmentally friendly technologies and activities
