
Regional drawing and photo competitions were held in several countries, culminating in a series of presentations by the local organisers. Below are details and pictures for each regional competition. |

Denmark - Nakskov and NørreballeBaltic Sea Solutions www.bass.nu Over 50 children participated in the competition from various schools including - Madeskolen, SFO Troldhøjen and Vestenskovskole in Nakskov, and Maribo Landskolen, in Nørreballe. The competition was organised by Baltic Sea Solutions and culminated in a prize presentation at an International energy conference held at Hotel Maribo Søpark Aps in May 2007. Finland - KauhavaEnergy Agency of South Ostrobothnia 80 children between the ages of 6 and 11 from Kosola School in Kauhava, South Ostobothnia, participated in the ManagEnergy competition. Before the competition began, Thermopolis Oy presented a lesson on energy, which focused on renewables and introduced the children to the Finnish version of the KidsCorner website. The picture is from a local newspaper in Kauhava, which ran a story on the competition. |

Lithuania - KaunasLEI - Lithuanian Energy Institute In Kaunas, the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI), Laboratory of Renewable Energy, ran a regional ManagEnergy photography competition involving children from 7 different schools including Kaunas "Aušros" gymnasium, Kaunas Viktoro Kuprevičiaus secondary school, Kaunas Juozo Grušo secondary school and VDU "Rasos" gymnasium. The entries included several excellent images portraying local renewable energy sources and energy within the local environment, many with evocative titles such as 'Sun energy for people', 'Cloud mill, 'In the saddle of the wind', and 'Beautiful biomass'. The region produced the overall winner of the ManagEnergy Online Photo Competition 2007 - Arnas Karpavičius, age 15, Kaunas Juozo Grušo Secondary School. A presentation to Arnas and regional winners took place at the LEI on 28th November 2007. |

Spain - GijónAgencia Local de la Energía de Gijón In Gijón, the regional competition was organised by Agencia Local de la Energía de Gijón. 200 children aged 9-11 participated from several schools including Federico García Lorca, Rio Piles and San Jose. |

Spain - Castilla y LeónEREN - Ente Regional de la Energía
de Castilla y León www.jcyl.es EREN promoted the ManagEnergy competition to 40 schools in North Central Iberia. Primary schools participating in the drawing competition included C.P.Teodoro Martinez Gadañon, Maristas San José de Leon, Colegio Público Miguel Delibes and C.R.A. Campopetre. While older students from Santa Teresa, León and I.E.S. Comuneros de Castilla entered photographs. The region produced the overall winner of the Europewide drawing compeition, Alba Alvarez Castro, Age 10 of C.P. La Palomera, León. A presentation to Alba and her class, as well as regional winners, was held at the offices of EREN in León on 15th November 2007. |

Portugal - AlmadaEscola secundária com 3º ciclo de Romeu Correia A science teacher from Escola secundária com 3º ciclo de Romeu Correia, Almada organised a photography project with a group of students aged 13-14. Images ranged from solar powered cars, wind turbines to more abstract pictures representing energy and the sun. The winning entries received T-shirts (although some of the older boys were a little reluctant to be caught on camera wearing their cartoon reindeers!) |

Portugal - Coimbra and LeiriaINESC Coimbra (Instituto de Engenharia
de Sistemas
e Computadores de Coimbra) INESC Coimbra is an R&D Institute affiliated with the University of Coimbra in Portugal. In addition to teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Coimbra and Polytechnic Institutes, and carrying out R&D projects, the institute is actively involved in energy efficiency issues. In particular, researchers at INESC Coimbra act as consultants to EDP, the main Portuguese utility, in the preparation of a Plan for the Promotion of End-Use Efficiency. The ManagEnergy competition provided an opportunity for the institute to further extend its energy education activities in local schools. Prior to running a regional competition with schools in Coimbra and Leiria, INESC Coimbra produced a brochure on energy efficiency, incorporating pictures downloaded from the ManagEnergy website. The material was distributed to teachers and children (1st to 4th grade, 6-10 years old) to encourage participation in the competition and to provide advice on simple energy saving actions children could perform in their homes. |

Serbia - NationwideRepublic
of Serbia Energy Efficiency Agency (SEEA) The most extensive regional competition was organised by the Republic of Serbian Energy Efficiency Agency. 7100 entries arrived from some 600 schools from Subotica to Novi Sad. These included 124 drawings and photos that were submitted to the ManagEnergy competition. The Serbian competition was supported by 'Electric Power Industry of Serbia' (EPI) and the Natural Museum of Belgrade. The project was promoted at an Energy Efficiency event and press conference on the 20th June 2007. A special thank you does to the SEEA, for the vast amount of organisational and administration work required to promoting the competition to hundreds of schools across the country, and to process the thousands of entries received. |

Romania - BrailaBraila County Council Braila County Council organised regional versions of both the drawing and photography competition in Romanian schools. Students aged 15-16 from Colegiul National "Nicolae Balescu' submitted a range of photographs, while children between the ages of 7 and 9 competed on behalf of Scoala Generala Nr. 10 in Braila. Following their participation in the competition, Braila County Council also very kindly translated all the ManagEnergy KidsCorner content, enabling the a Romanian version of the website to be made available to schools across the country. |

UK - PrestonBowland Bioenergy The regional competitions also offered an opportunity for energy companies
to get involved with local schools. Bowland Bioenergy is an independent
provider of wood-fuel, boilers and associated equipment, based
near Preston, Lancashire in the North West of the UK. The company
ran a local ManagEnergy drawing competition with a focus on bioenergy
in Brabins Endowed Primary School and St. Mary's R.C. Primary School

UK - PembrokeshireLeafstream Ltd A local competition in Pembrokeshire, Wales was organised by Leafstream. Initially the consultancy visited the St Florence Church of Wales VC School to demonstrate the ManagEnergy KidsCorner website. A presentation was made to pupils aged 8-11 covering the impact of climate change, the challenges of diminishing fossil fuel reserves and how these can be addressed by energy saving measures at home and in school. The Ronaldo Reindeer animated cartoon and photo galleries were presented to children aged 6-7. Pupils in years 4-6 then participated in the competition. The winners were presented with T-shirts and certificates and a selection of entries were submitted for the Europewide contest. |

UK - OrkneyEuropean Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) In the Orkney Isles, off the north coast of Scotland, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) organised a drawing competition for pupils at Stromness Primary 7. The winner and 5 runners-up of the local competition were invited up to EMEC's offices on the morning of July 13th 2007. They received their ManagEnergy T-shirts and visited the wave test site at Billia Croo. The three winners are all 11 years old and due to go to Stromness Academy in August. |

UK - KentEnvironment and Regeneration, Kent County Council The Environment and Regeneration department of Kent County Council demonstrated ManagEnergy KidsCorner and ran a colouring competition at the Kent County Show 2007. KidsCorner was displayed on 2 screens on a Renewables stand, which focused on bioenergy and non-food crops. Over 3 days, 15000 people visited the stand and 250 children entered a colouring competition using pictures that had been printed out from the ManagEnergy website. The winners were presented with Ronaldo the Reindeer T-shirts. |
